"Hills Like White Elephants" is a story in which a couple argue about an operation the girl is thinking about having. It begins with the couple at a train station in Barcelona. The girl points out that the hills look like white elephants. An argument ensues, and the man is trying to convince the girl that the operation is simple, almost as if it is not an operation at all. He says afterwards, they can have everything, but the girl contradicts him. She says they cannot have the world anymore because it does not belong to them, and once they take it away, you are never going to get it back. She is referring to the child she is carrying, and once she has the procedure, which an abortion, things will never be the same. The man tries to make her feel better, but she only says she does not feel anything. The man then takes their bags to where the train will come, and asks the girl if she feels any better. She tells him that nothing is wrong with her, almost as if the argument had never happened.
